Bento lunches

August 21st, 2008

Some months ago I discovered the art of bento making. A bento (or obento) is a Japanese single-portion takeout lunch packed in a box. The traditional bento consists of rice, fish/meat and vegetables. But I’m a vegetarian therefore I only use veggies, rice and eggs, tofu or nuts for my lunches.

What I like about bento boxes is the combination of creativity and cooking because the main goal of bento making is to make it appealing to the eye. My goal is of course to make mine as cute as possible. And another big plus; these lunches help me to eat healthier.

Below you see the bento I made today. It’s a very simple one but it tasted very good. The contents are: a cute rice ball (onigiri) with soysaus, cucumber and carrot sticks with homemade guacamole and a bunny shaped egg. I used a special egg mold for the bunny and wagame (seaweed) for the face of the rice ball.

[...] adore my Mr. Bento, but it’s strictly a functional thing. These bento lunches are all about the cuteness [...]

You have a mistake on your shop website thing. On the “About she likes cute” page you said ‘Due health issues’ instead of ‘Due to health issues’.

WOW! It seems so simple, but it must have been a lot of work! I recently discovered Bento Boxes too. I especially love the ones for kids, with Bento-lunches shaped liked rockets. But I also know that I will never become a Bento-mom.. it’s way too much work for me… Looking forward to your new Bento’s!!
